How It Started
A Simple Idea, Rooted in Community
Afribit started as a Bitcoin training programme for university students in Nairobi. It grew into something the founders didn't fully plan: a grassroots movement to end financial exclusion in Kibera using Bitcoin as the tool.
Close to 80% of Kibera's residents are unbanked. No documents, no credit history, no way into formal finance. Bitcoin changed that. With a phone and a Lightning wallet, anyone earns, saves, and spends. Instantly. Without asking permission from anyone.
Today Afribit connects 40+ merchants, runs Taka Sats (waste-to-Bitcoin), trains youth and women in financial literacy, and is proving what a circular Bitcoin economy looks like at street level.
